Two hundred amps is a common electrical service size for modern homes, but it is not an automatic requirement or a guarantee of unlimited capacity. The appropriate service size depends on a code-compliant load calculation, existing equipment, planned electrical loads, and utility requirements.
What the Service Rating Means
The service rating describes the electrical system’s designed capacity under specific conditions. It is not the amount of current the home uses continuously. The main breaker, panel bus, service conductors, meter equipment, and other components must be coordinated for the service rating.
Do not rely on the main breaker label alone when planning work. Equipment alterations and older installations require professional verification.
When 100-Amp Service May Be Adequate
Some smaller homes with fossil-fuel heating, modest appliance loads, and no major electrification plans may operate safely on a properly maintained 100-amp service. Even an EV charger may be possible when the calculated load, charging rate, and approved load management support it.
Adequacy is property-specific. Breaker space, equipment condition, and wiring safety are separate questions from service capacity.
Loads That Can Support the Case for 200 Amps
Multiple large electric loads can make additional capacity useful. Examples include heat pumps with electric backup heat, electric water heating, induction cooking, dryers, hot tubs, workshops, central air conditioning, and Level 2 EV charging.
An addition, accessory dwelling unit, second EV, or conversion from fuel-fired appliances may change the calculation. Discuss projects planned over the next several years so the service is not designed around only today’s load.
Why Breaker Space Is Not Capacity
An electrical panel can have empty breaker positions while the service has little calculated capacity remaining. It can also have adequate service capacity but no suitable space for a new circuit. Solutions may include a panel replacement, listed subpanel, load management, circuit changes, or a service upgrade.
Never install a larger main breaker or new high-demand circuit without verifying the ratings of the complete system.
When More Than 200 Amps May Be Considered
Large homes, extensive electric heating, multiple EVs, workshops, pools, accessory structures, or substantial commercial-style loads may require a different design. Options can include a larger service or multiple coordinated panels, subject to calculations and utility availability.
More capacity is not inherently better. Larger equipment can add cost and complexity without benefit if the load does not justify it.
What a Service Upgrade Involves
Increasing capacity may require a new panel, meter enclosure, exterior disconnect, service conductors, mast or underground conduit, grounding and bonding, surge protection, permits, inspection, and utility coordination. Site conditions and local requirements determine the actual scope.
A panel replacement at the existing capacity is different from a service upgrade. Confirm which project an estimate proposes.
Use a Load Calculation, Not a Rule of Thumb
A licensed electrician evaluates fixed appliances, heating and cooling, cooking, laundry, general loads, EV charging, and other equipment using the applicable calculation method. This provides a defensible basis for service size and alternative load-management options.
