Use this checklist to organize conversations with the electrician, designer, contractor, and equipment suppliers before rough-in begins.
Document Existing Electrical Conditions
Identify the service rating, panel location, panel condition, available circuit positions, major appliances, and known wiring concerns. Photograph the panel, meter area, utility service, mechanical equipment, and spaces being renovated.

List Every New Major Load
Create an equipment schedule for cooking appliances, laundry, HVAC, water heating, pumps, hot tubs, workshops, and specialty equipment. Include exact model information when available because voltage and circuit requirements vary.
Also document future plans for EV charging, solar, batteries, generators, additions, or accessory dwelling units. The load calculation should reflect the complete direction of the property.
Confirm Panel and Service Capacity
Breaker space and service capacity are different. The electrician should determine whether the existing equipment can support the renovation or whether the project needs a subpanel, panel replacement, load management, or service upgrade.
If utility work is required, begin coordination early. Utility design and scheduling can affect the construction timeline.
Plan Receptacles Around Real Use
Map furniture, counters, televisions, desks, beds, appliances, charging areas, and cleaning needs. Code establishes minimum requirements, but useful placement often goes beyond minimum spacing.
Consider dedicated circuits, exterior power, garage equipment, holiday lighting, bidet seats, motorized shades, and accessible charging locations before walls close.
Design Lighting and Controls Together
Create a room-by-room lighting plan for general, task, accent, exterior, and emergency needs. Decide fixture types, color temperature, dimming, multi-location controls, occupancy sensors, and smart controls.
Confirm that fixtures, drivers, dimmers, and controls are compatible. Plan switch locations around door swings, cabinetry, and circulation.
Coordinate Kitchens and Mechanical Equipment
Kitchen and mechanical equipment often changes late. Obtain manufacturer requirements for ranges, ovens, cooktops, refrigeration, dishwashers, disposals, ventilation, HVAC, and water heaters before electrical rough-in.
Equipment substitutions can change circuit size, voltage, disconnects, and placement.
Include EV Charging and Backup Power Pathways
Even if installation is later, a renovation may be the right time to reserve panel space, install conduit, establish cable routes, or plan equipment locations. Generator transfer equipment and EV charging can interact with service capacity and panel layout.
Plan Structured Cabling
Wi-Fi access points work best with intentional wired connections. Plan Ethernet, cameras, doorbells, televisions, workstations, equipment racks, and pathways for future cable. Provide power, ventilation, and service access at the network location.
Confirm Permits, Inspections, and Responsibilities
Clarify who obtains permits, schedules inspections, supplies fixtures, patches finishes, coordinates utility work, and documents changes. Maintain an updated panel directory and retain equipment manuals after completion.
